Marina Village
Marina Village is the jewel in the crown of The Waterfront Barrow-in-Furness and will see the creation of a new sustainable community in the heart of the town.
The development will help extend the choice of housing and leisure facilities on offer in the town and sees the creation of new iconic structures that will put Barrow’s waterfront back on the map. Marina Village is to be built on the site of disused rail sidings and will be a striking example of how an area of former industrial land can be transformed into a new sustainable community.
In all the development will take around 15 years to complete, with work to start on various elements of the project in 2009.
Marina Village includes:
• 650 homes
• Leisure facilities
• A 350-berth marina and boat lift
• Watersports Centre
• Iconic footbridge
HOMES
The 650 homes that will be built will cater for everyone from families and couples to single persons and will raise the bar in terms of the amount of housing on offer in Barrow as well as the standard and quality that today’s homebuyers demand. Any successful housing development needs to provide great facilities for its residents, which is why attractive green open spaces, children's play area and a network of pedestrian and cycle-friendly streets have been incorporated into the proposals. A new sports stadium and facilities for the town will also be part of the development package.
LEISURE FACILITIES
Marina Village will also boast an array of new facilities that raise the profile of the town as a place to visit, shop, eat, drink and relax. There will be a brand new hotel, retail space, restaurants and bars, all with an attractive waterside location. These facilities will compliment existing improvements to the retail and leisure offering that is taking place in the town centre.
MARINA
A 350-berth marina will put Barrow firmly on the itineraries of yacht owners. The marina will open Barrow up to the lucrative boating market and help to meet the strong demand for marina berths on England’s west coast. The marina, which will be situated along the edge of Buccleuch Dock and adjacent to the residential, leisure and retail developments, will also provide much sought after winter storage for boats.
The Marina will be served by a striking overland boatlift - designed by the same engineers as the iconic Falkirk Wheel - which will enable boats to transfer from the Walney Channel to the Marina quickly, comfortably and in style.
WATERSPORTS CENTRE
Barrow is making waves as a centre of excellence for watersports. The town boasts more than 20 watersports clubs and in the past few years has hosted stages of the World Speedboat, World Jet Ski Championships and the British Kite Surfing Championships. This popularity, doubled with the introduction of speed restrictions on Lake Windermere, has identified a clear need for better facilities. West Lakes Renaissance will team up with the private sector to build a centre that will cater for canoeing, sailing, kite surfing, wind-surfing and power boat racing.
It will not only just provide great facilities for Barrowvians and the people of Furness and South Cumbria, but also draw watersports fans from across the UK and further afield.
FOOTBRIDGE
London has the Millennium Bridge, Newcastle the ‘winking eye’ bridge. In both cases the structures have become recognisable features that symbolise the regeneration of waterfront areas. A landmark footbridge for Barrow-in-Furness that will link the Ramsden Business Park with Marina Village will have the same impact, with a design that will not only symbolise the Masterplan development but also offer superb views across the redeveloped area, a new face for Barrow.
West Lakes Renaissance is leading the procurement of the site and will oversee its development. Other partners working on the projects are Barrow Borough Council, North West Development Agency, English Partnerships and Associated British Ports.
