Young People are the town of tomorrow; listening and responding to the voice of young people is crucial for our community.
That is why West Lakes Renaissance have helped to fund the team and ensure that our young people take an active role in shaping their town’s future.
The Youth Re:Action Team was launched in February 2006. Fifteen enthusiastic young people, representing five Barrow Secondary Schools, came together to learn more about regeneration, highlight young peoples views about regeneration and encourage their peers to be interested in the changes in their town.
Research has been central to the Team’s goal; they want to represent the true voice of young people. Katie Carr from Lancaster University equipped the Team with research skills and the Team website became a vital tool helping them to survey over 1,300 young people of Barrow about their ideas for Barrow.
The Team reported their initial research finding to stakeholders who responded enthusiastically, one stakeholder said: “The Youth Re:Action Team has put themselves on the agenda and we now need to respond.”
Communicating with other young people is crucial to success. The Team knew that to get the attention of others they needed to talk in an imaginative way. A short film was made by the Team introducing Barrow; the film will help the Team to work with the students in their schools to carry on the dialogue about regeneration.
In September 2007 a new group of young people are about to become the Youth Re:Action Team, the Team is growing to include Barrow Sixth Form College and Furness College alongside the schools represented. The new Team will build on the work already done and keep the Youth Re:Action Team on the agenda so that young people have their say.
