Dewent Howe - Workington
Derwent Howe is a large scale mixed employment area that has huge potential for improvement.
The vision for Derwent Howe is to establish it as an important and vibrant employment area that not only plays a pivotal role in the regeneration of Workington and the surrounding area but also provides the economy with a significant boost by providing existing and new businesses with high quality space to establish and grow.
Derwent Howe has an excellent brownfield location on the edge of Workington town centre and will good transport links with West Cumbria.
However, significant work needs to be done to improve the area, assemble land and prepare it for development.
A Masterplan for Derwent Howe is currently being produced and will be completed in early 2008. A Feasibility Study – which is being led by private sector interest – is being funded by West Lakes Renaissance into a multi-modal freight facility to access the harbour.
Plans are afoot for residential, retail and leisure developments at the former Corus steelworks, which is located in Derwent Howe. The site was recently purchased by a private sector developer.
