Lillyhall Business Park - Workington
Lillyhall Business Park has quickly established itself as one of West Cumbria’s high potential employment sites. In 2007 work on the second phase of development at the park started in earnest, with the creation of much needed office space, a factory and a new academy specialising in developing skills in the nuclear sector.
West Lakes Renaissance has provided funding and support to enable the second wave of projects to proceed and ensure that the new arrivals and the business park in general, reach its full potential.
WEST CUMBRIA HOUSE
Demand is high for business units and office space at Lillyhall Business Park. West Cumbria House is designed to go some way to meet the popularity of the business park and is expected to create 100 full time jobs, while safeguarding a further 35.
Office accommodation will be offered on ‘easy in and out’ terms to encourage clustering of businesses. Units will be offered on a flexible basis ranging from 250 to 6,000 sqft. West Cumbria House will also offer a three meeting rooms.
West Cumbria House is the second phase of business centre facilities at Lillyhall. The existing Lillyhall Business Centre is located just yards away in Jubilee Road and was fully let within 18 months of completion.
CUMBERLAND PENCIL COMPANY
The Derwent Pencil Company has been one of Keswick’s main employers for over a century. However, the company needed to find new premises to enable it to operate more efficiently.
Work on a new 4,000 sqm headquarters, which includes a factory and offices, began in Spring 2007 and will be completed by late 2007, early 2008. The project has created 40 full time temporary construction jobs and will facilitate the relocation of the company’s 74 staff.
The factory is located just behind Lillyhall Business Centre.
ENERGUS
Energus is a major initiative that will provide a world class centre of excellence in the UK for nuclear skills development and support.
With a huge concentration of nuclear decommissioning activity taking place at Sellafield, the academy’s positioning on Lillyhall Business Park just a few miles away was logical.
It is of paramount importance that local businesses operating in the nuclear engineering and construction sectors receive the support Energus will offer to enable them to successfully complete the contracts they have with the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority. It is also essential that the right levels of skills are developed to for the nuclear industry that enables the UK to successfully carry out new nuclear build programmes.
Energus will be employer led and focused on the needs and demands on companies directly involved in the management of nuclear facilities in West Cumbria as well as the smaller local companies in the nuclear supply chain.
Facilities provided by Energus will include;
• High quality generic and specialist business support for companies adapting the decommissioning process; diversify into environmental remediation and restoration products and services; and for new companies that are established around the decommissioning process.
• High quality training facilities including classrooms, laboratories and practical, cutting edge training facilities ranging from test rigs to simulate a control room; an atmospherically sealed room; and video screens that simulate the decommissioning environment.
• Computer Aided Design and CAM rooms to support employers from across the North West who want to utilise the internet for marketing.
Work started on a 5,600 sqm Energus building, which is adjacent to Lillyhall Business Centre, in March 2007.
