Maryport Marina & Harbour

Maryport’s magnificent coastal location has been its greatest asset through history – helping to import and export products while also drawing visitors for far and wide.

So it is no surprise that there is a long waiting list to moor at the Maryport Marina – and its popularity is set to rise following the completion of a £1.7 million revamp. September 2008 marked the culmination of five years work to create new and improve existing facilities at the marina. It now features:

• Upgraded and refurbished boat repair facilities, which will enable the current marine business to be developed
• A brand new office complex for marina owners Maryport Developments, with room for other companies wishing to invest in Maryport
• Rearranged pontoons, which has created an additional 30 berths and many other areas to provide greater flexibility, including access for larger boats
• New boat lifting equipment and new car parking facilities.

The improvements will not only help attract more yacht and boat tourists to the town, but will also play an important part of helping to establish Maryport as a high quality tourism destination. The project was the combined effort of West Lakes Renaissance, Cumbria County Council, Allerdale Borough Council, Maryport Developments, West Cumbria Development Fund and the Northwest Regional Development Agency. The work has been carried out by Capita, the designers of the marina, and contractors Stobbarts.

Meanwhile at neighbouring Maryport Harbour a Masterplan is currently being drawn up on behalf of West Lakes Renaissance and Cumbria County Council by consultants DTZ. The Masterplan will set out clear direction to the development of the harbour over the next 10-15 years. Potential developments include ambitious proposals to significantly increase the water impoundment within the harbour and the creation of new facilities for a wide variety of users.

The development of Maryport Marina and Harbour is part of West Lakes Renaissance’s Port Investment Programme – which aims to utilise West Cumbria’s marinas, ports and harbours for business, tourism and leisure use. The Port Investment Programme is a key project contained within the Britain’s Energy Coast™ Masterplan.
