Service Sector Grant Scheme
If Maryport is to truly establish itself as a centre for high quality tourism then the accommodation on offer needs to be raised.
As part of these improvements, and the ongoing work to improve the appearance of the town, West Lakes Renaissance offered tourist-related businesses the chance to apply for a Hotel/Service Sector Grant.
One of the beneficiaries is Punch Taverns, which owns the Royal Victoria Hotel in the town centre. Once a landmark four-storey hotel, it is now in needed of complete renovation. This is why we awarded a grant of £110,000 towards restoring the building to its former grandeur. In total Punch Taverns will be investing more than £600,000 on the restoration, which has already begun.
Once completed it will not only offer visitors a great place to stay but also mark the restoration of another of Maryport’s most striking listed buildings.
So successful is this project that we are now looking to roll it out across the whole of West Cumbria in 2008.
