Derwent Howe
An exciting future lies ahead for the Derwent Howe area of Workington.
The area, which lies to the south of the town, has been identified as a key employment site (see Employment Sites) and a high priority for regeneration funding.
The recent closure of the Corus steel works located within Derwent Howe, has accelerated the need for West Lakes Renaissance and its partners to prepare a new vision for this significant brownfield site.
The vision for Derwent Howe is to establish it as an important and vibrant employment area that not only plays a pivotal role in the regeneration of Workington and the surrounding area but also provides the economy with a significant boost by providing existing and new businesses with high quality space to establish and grow.
Working with Cumbria County Council – who bought the land earmarked for development back in the 1980s – Allerdale Borough Council, Northwest Regional Development Agency and the West Cumbria Development Agency, we have commissioned a Masterplan for Derwent Howe.
The Masterplan is being drawn up by consultants White Young Green and will identify the level of public funding required to transform the area and also where this funding should be focussed and is expected to be completed by March.
White Young Green is also working closely with Port Derwent Developments; Eatonfield Developments, which has recently purchased the Corus site; as well as potential developers and business currently located in Derwent Howe, to devise the Masterplan.
Both Port Derwent Developments and Eatonfield Developments are proposing large scale residential, retail and industrial uses for the land they own.
