Harrington Harbour
West Cumbria’s coastal location makes it an ideal place for residential, leisure and tourism developments.
Harrington Harbour has huge potential to be transformed into a high quality leisure marina and residential site. £500,000 worth of safety works and improvements to the harbour were completed in early 2008, paving the way for Allerdale Borough Council to generate interest from developers in the site. Options currently include the harbour’s transformation into a leisure marina and the building of harbourside homes, similar to those already built at nearby Maryport.
West Lakes Renaissance invested £364,000 and Allerdale Borough Council £108,000 to repair the harbour’s century old walls and erect new safety railings. The work has helped secure the immediate future of this historic harbour, built in 1760 to export coal and limestone quarried from nearby pits.
The development of Harrington Harbour is part of West Lakes Renaissance’s Port Investment Programme – which aims to utilise West Cumbria’s marinas, ports and harbours for business, tourism and leisure use. The Port Investment Programme is a key project contained within the Britain’s Energy Coast™ Masterplan.
