Workington Transport Interchange
Improving transport links in West Cumbria is vital if the area’s economic revival is to take flight.
This is why West Lakes Renaissance is working with partners to develop a £2.8 million transport interchange in the town – bringing together rail, bus, car and cycle in one, easily assessable place. The new development will also help to give visitors to the town a good first impression.
The new interchange will be situated adjacent to the town’s railway station and will have new bus stands, extra car parking, new bike shelters and a taxi rank. Other features will include a café, toilets, fountain and improved pedestrian access.
A high quality bus corridor linking the Interchange with the redeveloped town centre will also be developed to ensure that people can move easily around Workington once they arrive.
The impressive plans will not only provide a benchmark in transport design for Cumbria but also the North West.
West Lakes Renaissance will contribute £1 million to the scheme.
The planning application for the interchange is expected to be submitted in February 2008, with work on site commencing later in the year.
West Lakes Renaissance is working with Cumbria County Council, Allerdale Borough Council, Northwest Regional Development Agency, Network Rail and Stagecoach to develop the interchange.
